French artists' work on display in Asia for first time

Currently at the Liuli China Museum in Shanghai, the exhibition Flying Eyes features 46 works of art from 14 French artists selected from the permanent collection of Galerie Capazza, an important institution of contemporary art and culture in France.

Opening to the public on March 16, the exhibition will run until Sept 1. This is the first large showcase of the French institution in China, according to Laura Capazza-Durand, director of Galerie Capazza. “Most of the participating artists are leaders in their respective fields, and for many of them, this is their first time exhibiting here in Asia,” she said.

One of the most important artists on exhibition is the French sculpture artist Georges Jeanclos (1933-1997), whose creations have been collected by eminent museums around the world. The two pieces on exhibition, the bronze sculpture Pieta and Couple, a ceramic work, feature his strong expressions for suffering and pathos, a familiar motif in his creation.

Galerie Capazza is located in a historical castle dating to the 17th century. It was founded by Gerard and Sophie Capazza more than 40 years ago, and showcases more than 80 artists’ creations of a wide range of media and styles in a space of 2,000 square meters.
